加州野火延燒數天，範圍超過2百萬英畝（逾89萬公頃）土地。美西時間9日上午，舊金山灣區空氣中充滿煙霧和灰燼，天空、太陽都蓋上一層橘紅色。從衛星雲圖角度看，更可見明顯大片煙塵壟罩在灣區上空。
中央氣象局鄭明典分享美國NASA的EOSDIS衛星雲圖，「不看不知道它的嚴重，乳黃色部分都是大火的煙塵！在煙塵影響下，白天太陽都會是偏紅色的！」
綜合外媒報導，由於從太平洋飄來的霧夾在煙霧和地表之間，幾乎沒有煙味，空氣品質也未達不健康標準，但較高海拔的地區相對容易受到影響。
灣區空品管理局發言人拉爾夫（Ralph
Borrmann）說，煙霧過濾掉藍光，讓橘紅色和紅色的光抵達地麵，這說明為何當地民眾看到有如「末日餘暉」的景象。
