綜合外媒報導，相關單位表示，調查人員初判，疑似有卡車撞橋導致塌陷，不過詳細事發原因仍待調查釐清，所幸5人沒有生命危險。相關單位也說，這座天橋2月曾接受檢查，並於5月發布的報告中，被評為橋況不佳，並打算修繕更新。
報導指出，這座天橋在凱尼爾沃思大道（Kenilworth Avenue）與波克街（Polk
Street）處倒塌，破裂的混凝土、金屬碎片散落車道，還壓在卡車身上，且現場因柴油外洩，另出動危險物品處理小組。相關單位推估，可能週四才能將橋移開，並稱工作人員正在檢查當地他座橋梁，以防類似情況再度發生。
