美國廣播公司（ABC）報導，這列西南酋長號（Southwest
Chief）客運列車上載著243名乘客和12名機組員。事故發生在當地時間12時42分，列車在密蘇裏州西部門登市（Mendon）的一處路口撞上一輛傾卸卡車。
密蘇裏州公路巡邏隊表示，共有7節車廂出軌。
