美國一列貨運列車2月3日晚在俄亥俄州（Ohio）東巴勒斯坦鎮（East
Palestine）出軌，車上所載有毒化學物質引發大火。此事帶來的致癌物在這2天內或已隨雨水蔓延，汙染空氣、大量土地和水。當地居民拍攝照片顯示，有大量動物死亡。有網民說，這可能成為美國史上大型生態災難之一。
身在東巴勒斯坦鎮疏散區外的農場東主Taylor
Holzer說，他合法飼養好幾隻狐狸，都已病入膏肓。他說其中一隻出現狂咳及腹瀉的徵狀，情況惡化得很快。
他也指出，人們所飼養的貓都在生病和死去。除了動物，在受影響地生活的人也出現不適。

事發2月3日晚，在一列運載氯乙烯（Vinyl chloride）的諾福克南方（Norfolk Southern
Corporation）列車，在美國俄州出軌後發生火災。當地居民拍得影片顯示，現場大火與黑煙直撲半空，甚至多到能被氣象雷達偵測到。黑煙並已蔓延到附近小鎮。
出事貨運列車有逾100節車廂，約50節在俄州東部鄰近賓夕法尼亞州的小鎮東巴勒斯坦城（East
Palestine）出軌——其中有20節運載有毒物質，出軌的佔一半，包括5個運載壓縮氯乙烯的車廂。
當地應急部門來到6日對毒物進行“受控釋放”操作，將車廂餘下的化學物進行排放及燃燒。這導致方圓數公裏內、近2,000名居民因麵臨威脅，需要緊急疏散。
有關這場汙染災難還有另一小插曲。當地政府就此事在8日舉行的新聞發布會，非裔記者蘭伯特（Evan
Lambert）報道時被警方粗暴地拘捕。
他被要求勿在州長發表講話時進行直播報道。警方稱他擅闖發布會現場，他被關押5小時並付出保釋金後才獲釋。
從警員隨身攝錄鏡頭拍得的影片，可見蘭伯特被2名警察押著離開，並將他推倒在地，再向他上了手銬。蘭伯特被他們按住時說：“這就是2023年作為一名黑人記者的感覺”。
