6 月 17 日上午，翻譯界泰鬥、北京大學新聞與傳播學院教授許淵衝先生在北京逝世，享年 100 歲。
許淵衝是誰？
生於軍閥混戰的亂世，炮火中求學於西南聯大，27 歲留法，30
歲歸國；他是錢鍾書的得意門生、楊振寧的同窗摯友、俞敏洪的授業恩師；首獲國際翻譯界最高獎 ” 北極光 ” 的亞洲翻譯家……
這一堆 ” 標簽 ” 不如他在名片上印的簡單直接：
” 書銷中外百餘本，詩譯英法唯一人 “

有人婉言相勸：這會不會顯得 ” 不謙虛 “？他理直氣壯地回應：” 這是實事求是！我的名字比名片還響！”
是的，他有十足的底氣——
因為他，中國讀者認識了於連、哈姆雷特、包法利夫人、羅密歐與朱麗葉……
因為他，西方世界知曉了李白、杜甫、白居易、蘇東坡、李清照、湯顯祖……

從夜裏 ” 偷時間 ” 的人
暢春園的一棟老樓，總有一抹暖色很晚才沉入夜幕，那是許淵衝書房的燈光。退休以後，許淵衝每天在那裏對著台式電腦，從晚上十點工作到淩晨三四點。晚上對他而言是黃金時段，是
” 高產期 “。
每天連續麵對電腦屏幕長達六七個小時，許淵衝樂此不疲，堅持將自己每日的翻譯成果一字一字地敲進電腦文檔。
在耄耋之年，許淵衝仍然製定了 ” 每天翻譯 1000 字 ” 的工作計劃，93
歲時製定了翻譯莎士比亞全集的目標。

” 要將一個國家創造的美
轉化為世界的美 “
1948 年，許淵衝赴法留學。新中國成立時，許淵衝身處巴黎，在心中抱定讀成歸國的誌向。

兩年後，31
歲的許淵衝學成歸國。在大學執教的同時，繼續著自己對翻譯事業的熱忱。之後幾年時間，他出版了英譯中《一切為了愛情》、中譯英法《毛澤東詩詞》等，成為我國將中國詩詞譯成英法韻文的第一人。
毛澤東的詩詞中有一句” 不愛紅裝愛武裝 “，許淵衝將其譯為 “To face the
powder and not to powder the face”。在英文中，”face the powder” 意為 ” 麵對硝煙
“，”powder the face” 則意為 ” 塗脂抹粉
“。這兩個地道表達是許淵衝大二閱讀英國報紙時默默記下的，此時妙手拈來，豪邁勇健的巾幗形象宛然在目。
1983 年，許淵衝到北大教書，後來陸續翻譯了英文或法文的《詩經》《楚辭》《牡丹亭》等中國古典文學作品，也將《紅與黑》《約翰 ·
克利斯朵夫》等外文佳作譯到國內。

他曾說，把一個國家創造的美，轉化為世界的美，這是世界的樂趣，也是他翻譯詩歌的初衷。他不僅盡最大可能保留詩歌的音韻美，更采用了外國人能看得懂的表達方式，真正實現了翻譯中的文明互通，架起了一座中外語言之橋。

” 好上加好，精益求精
不到絕頂，永遠不停 “
2017 年 2 月，許淵衝做客《朗讀者》節目。96 歲的老人拄著拐杖，徐徐邁入會場，顫巍巍遞出了一張名片——”
書銷中外百餘本，詩譯英法唯一人 “。乍一聽，似乎有些張狂的意味。可他立馬解釋道：” 我實事求是！”
許淵衝的家中，高懸著 ” 自豪使人進步，自卑使人落後 ”
的條幅。房間裏那些塞滿舊著新作的書架，是他數十年的翻譯實踐累積，是他的底氣。

不知老之將至 “。他常常忘記自己的年齡，隻有在麵對蠅頭小字的書本需要拿放大鏡時，才會感歎一句 ” 確實是老了 “。
2007 年，他被醫生診斷為直腸癌，斷言隻有 7 年可活。2014 年他卻神采奕奕地站在領獎台上，成為摘得 ”
北極光 ” 傑出文學獎的首位亞洲翻譯家。

許淵衝的翻譯之道
許淵衝在翻譯古詩時自有一套理論。他認為，翻譯是追求兩種語言的 ” 雙贏
“，求真是低標準，求美是高標準；等值的翻譯容易失掉詩的精華，並且難以出精品。
與其將詩翻譯得味同嚼蠟，嘴裏像嚼著一大塊黃油麵包似的，不如在不失真的情況下使其優化和再創，以確保原詩的內蘊和存意不流失，在音形上更熨帖、更醒豁，使讀者能從中體味詩詞藝術的音韻之美。
為了追求譯詩藝術的高峰，許淵衝在翻譯上遵循孔子提出的 ” 從心所欲不逾矩 ” 的理念，提出 ” 以創補失 “” 美化之藝術 ”
的中國學派翻譯理論，即 ” 意美、音美、形美 ” 三美論、” 淺化、等化、深化 ” 三化論和 ” 知之、樂之、好之 ”
三之論，成為翻譯理論界的一大成果。
不管風吹浪打，勝似閑庭信步般走過一個世紀，他的秘訣就是如此簡單——心無旁騖。”
我為什麽能活這麽久啊？因為我每天都在創造美。我的翻譯是在為世界創造美。”
