這場審判因為COVID-19（2019冠狀病毒疾病）疫情而長期中斷，如今重啟。
美軍軍事法庭上擠滿檢察官、口譯員及5個辯護團隊，這些團隊為穆罕默德及4名共謀被告辯護，包括比納爾什布（Ramzi Bin
al-Shibh）、阿塔希（Walid bin Attash）、阿濟茲阿裏（Ali Abdul Aziz
Ali）與豪薩維（Mustafa al-Hawsawi）。
當年2976名受害者的家屬坐在厚玻璃後的旁聽席旁聽，如果被告遭定罪，可能會被處決。
但此審判9年來一直停滯在預審階段，因為當前核心問題在於，5名被告落網後一再遭美國中央情報局（CIA）刑求，相關審判程序沒有立即會結束的跡象。
