巴克斯郡(Bucks)檢察官溫卓布(Matt
Weintraub)2日表示，阮鄭的13歲和九歲的兒子中彈後，一直靠生命維持係統繼續維持生命特征，主要在等候「生命之禮」(Gift
of Life)安排，捐出身體器官。
溫卓布指出，調查剛剛開始，阮鄭作案的動機不明。

法庭紀錄顯示，阮鄭因為拖欠數月逾1.1萬美元房租，而與房東柯瑞娜·提尼-梅奇昂度(Corinna
Tini-Melchiondo)發生糾紛，法院做出對房東柯瑞娜有利的裁決後，下令阮鄭在3日前搬家。

柯瑞娜的哥哥愛德·提尼(Ed
Tini)是阮鄭的前夫，也是阮鄭小兒子的父親；但兩人後來離異，阮鄭2015年向法院提出離婚。柯瑞娜與阮鄭兩人是姑嫂關係。
阮鄭住的是複式結構房屋，與梅奇昂度家族的其他成員一起合住，因此槍聲吵醒了他們；22歲的奇安尼·梅奇昂度(Gianni
Melchiondo)聞聲前來查看時，發現阮鄭站在屋外的草坪，手裏拿著一盒照片。
阮鄭問他是否願意幫忙，把照片交給她的前夫，前夫與奇安尼在一個地方上班。奇安尼答應她並接過照片，此時阮鄭掏出左輪手槍對著他，連續兩次扣動扳機，但槍支故障，梅奇昂度奪路逃走，阮鄭也駕車離去。
警察在室內的床上發現兩個兒子頭部中彈，傷勢危重，將他們送到聖瑪麗醫療中心救治。
警方發出通輯令數小時後，華盛頓十字衛理公會教堂說阮鄭的車就在他們的停車場，警方趕到後，逮捕阮鄭，發現她的槍裏仍有子彈。

警方將阮鄭緊急送往聖瑪麗醫學中心，因為她已吞食毒品，企圖自殺。警方表示，阮女的槍是合法購買的。
