一名墨西哥官員周二表示，墨西哥北部，靠近美國邊境的一個移民拘留中心發生火災，造成39人死亡，29人受傷，情況嚴重。
美聯社報導，火災發生在美國與墨西哥接壤的華雷斯城(Ciudad Juarez)，這座城市與美國德州的艾爾帕索(El
Paso)接壤，被美國-墨西哥邊境圍牆隔開。。
據一名因匿名的救援人員表示，這個拘留中心大約有70名移民，大部分是委內瑞拉人，失火原因還不清楚，墨西哥總檢察長辦公室已經展開調查。
現場的照片顯示一片慘況，長排的遺體包在銀色床單下，各地救護車、消防員和貨車湧入現場。

華雷斯城是非法移民進入美國的主要過境點，當地龍蛇雜處，治安極其混亂。但是許多人也在此地等待機會，拘留所裡擠滿了等待機會過境的移民，向美國申請庇護，並等待程序的移民。
每個月大約有
20萬人試圖越過邊境，過墨西哥前往美國，除了墨西哥人以外，還有來自中美洲和南美洲的移民，他們申請庇護的理由包括家鄉貧困、治安問題、麵臨暴力威脅等等。
國際移民組織 (IOM) 最近一份報告指出，自 2014 年以來，約有 7,661 名移民在前往美國的途中死亡或失蹤，988
死於事故，或者死於半途。
