薩莫拉諾（Homero Zamorano）通過邊境檢查站時跟執法人員應對自如
美國德州周一發生一起駭人慘案，警方在一輛重型貨櫃車內發生大量遺體，至今日已經確認有53人死亡，據信死者都是非法移民，他們被司機丟包在美國南部邊境超過39度的高溫中活活熱死，當警方發現時司機也已逃逸。然而天網恢恢疏而不漏，警方仍抓到了這名喪心病狂的司機。
德州警方宣布抓到這名45歲的卡車司機，名叫薩莫拉諾（Homero
Zamorano），美國籍，警方調閱邊境監視器發現，他在檢查哨麵對邊境執法人員時談笑自如，顯然是走私慣犯；警方稱他在被捕時正在吸食冰毒，更試圖冒充倖存者以避免被拘留。目前由於他體內冰毒含量過高，必須先送醫。

警方稱整個偷渡過程對待移民比“動物還糟糕”，沒有提供水更沒有冷氣設備。
根據調查，薩莫拉諾在通過美墨邊境之後，疑似因為冷氣故障將卡車遺棄在聖安東尼奧郊外，由於酷熱導致卡車內的移民都苦不堪言，最後活活熱死。他目前麵臨刑事訴訟、罪名為“走私導致死亡”。
目前官方已經確認34名死者的身分，其中有22名墨西哥人2名宏都拉斯人以及7名瓜地馬拉人，大多數為墨西哥人。也有幾名倖存者遭受腦損傷和內出血，情況危急。

除了薩莫拉諾之外，還有一名同行，28歲的馬丁尼茲（Christian
Martinez）於28日被捕，並被控一項“合謀運送非法外國人”的罪名。這起人口走私案件是美國近代最嚴重的移民死亡事件之一，若兩人的罪刑成立，將可能麵臨死刑或終身監禁。
